Unilever is one of the leading Fast Moving Consumer Goods companies in the world with an annual turnover of ca 40 billion euros (2005). We employ 234 thousand people in around 100 countries. In 2005 we have spent over 1 billion euros on R&D, close to 2.5 % of our turnover. Over half the sales are generated by our Foods brands (Knorr, Flora/Becel, Hellmann’s, Lipton, Slim.Fast and Bertolli) the other half by our brands in the home and personal care market (Omo, Surf, Cif and Dove, Lux, Sunsilk, Pond’s, Axe/Lynx). It is Unilever’s mission to add vitality to life. We meet the everyday needs for nutrition, hygiene and personal care with brands that help people feel good, look good and get more out of life.
R&D at the heart of our business
Innovation drives our business to incorporate leading edge technologies in the development of its products and services, and to anticipate and reflect changing societal needs and lifestyles. Alongside “divisional” research in the main categories of Foods (Unilever R&D Vlaardingen , The Netherlands) and Home and Personal Care (Unilever R&D Port Sunlight, U.K.) , there is a Corporate Research Centre and a Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC) (at Colworth House, Sharnbrook, U.K.) The Corporate Research Centre works for the longer-term R&D input into Unilever and focuses on scientific and technological hot spots. SEAC ensures the high-level safety of our products.
Other research laboratories are in Shanghai, China and Mumbai, India. The development centres are spread all over the world.
